Higher Apprenticeship - HNC Construction Management (Construction Design and Build Technician)

Entry Requirements

• GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
• If in exceptional circumstances a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance.
• In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the apprenticeship qualification.

Candidates should also hold at least 1 qualification from the list below:

• BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction or another related Level 3 qualification.
• A- Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCSE subject.
• Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution.
• An international equivalent to the above qualifications.

Mature students with relevant industrial background may also be considered, subject to interview.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Level 4 Construction Management (Design & Build Technician) Apprenticeship Standard, which includes the following:

• A Level 4 HNC qualification in Construction and Built Environment (Construction Design & Build Technician) that meets the knowledge requirements of the standard and is approved by the industry's recognised professional bodies, meeting the educational requirements for Technician status or the equivalent level of membership.

Objective

The HNC requires 120 credits, comprising of 8 units as follows:

• Unit 1: Construction design project
• Unit 2: Construction technology or Unit 17: Civil Engineering technology
• Unit 4: The construction environment
• Unit 5: Legal and statutory requirements in construction
• Unit 6: Digital applications for construction information or Unit 26: Digital applications for building information modelling
• Unit 11: Financial management and business practices in construction
• Unit 12: Tender and procurement
• Unit 13: Building information modelling

How You Will Be Assessed

The Pearson HNC is a mix of assignments, project work and some exams. Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment (EPA).

At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will be ready for the EPA which includes:

• 40- minute multiple- choice knowledge test
• 2,500- word work- based project based on one of the following: an idea/ business opportunity, methodologies, quality standards or environmental impact
• 60- minute professional discussion with an independent assessor

In addition to the HNC apprenticeship, you will also produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills and behaviour required for this apprenticeship standard.

Course Progression

This programme is widely recognised by employers and professional bodies. The apprentice may wish to explore further education and/ or membership of relevant professional bodies.

Where Your Course Can Take You

This apprenticeship will include the knowledge, skills and behaviours typically required to achieve Technician status or the equivalent with the industry's recognised professional bodies. The final assessment process for this apprenticeship will typically be representative of the review process required for professional registration.

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.

For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £700.

A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £14,000.

Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
